"Hi, I'm Peter Mullin. Welcome to my boutique practice. What you see is what you get. No large phone systems here. I work for you and coordinate your wealth as your life changes. Clients like you tend to enjoy the warm interactions & freedom felt by delegating details to me."
My Mission :
I encourage clients to be brave in the face of uncertainty.
To be optimistic when others are pessimistic.
To take a calculated risk, and to seek to preserve and enhance their wealth.
This is what I believe about wealth
True wealth can be formed in times of extreme uncertainty. But you do have to be brave – and importantly – you need to be prepared for it. Not much for wealth has been made of a coulda, shoulda, woulda mentallity.
Cleints are not quick to return calls when life is comfortable. But the moment change or market volatilty knocks is when we are at the ready. It is then when a financial plan and prudent response can serve its purpose.
In times of comfort and I remain resolved and persistnely curious about how our human behaviors can be redirected toward opportunities that can forge the wealth a client desires in order to pursue their version of a comfortable life.
Some History that forms my Beliefs:
Personal
I was born and raised in Saint Cloud, MN within a family of 13 – I'm the third oldest. I graduated from Saint John's University (Collegeville, MN). I have a designation from the College of Financial Planning. It's called the Accredited Asset Management Specialist designtation –
AAMS®. (It pretty much means that I'm a nerd enough to learn more about details that bore folks like my wife.)
The Great Recession
I started as a financial advisor in 2008,* just as the Dow Jones was posting some infamous losses.
• September 15, 2008, Lehman Brothers files Bankruptcy
• September 29, 2008, Dow Jones posts a 6.98% loss
• October 9, 2008, Dow Jones posts a 7.33% loss
• October 15, 2008, Dow Jones posts a 7.87% loss
And it got better. It historically does. But talk about being thrown into the fire!
2020 and the COViD-19 Crisis (updated as of October 2020) |
If you think about it, the 2020 Pandemic Recession is exactly what my philosophy and practice are built for. This crisis has been in my wheel-house. On March 25, 2020, as the pandemic upended our lives and uncertainty bore its ugly head, I published one of my most-read blog posts,
Should We Do As the Billionaire Does? (Read here). I presented to clients LIVE from Facebook lecturing about the economy, market behaviors, and how we ought to leaning in to the crisis with measured optimism.
From that writing:
Is this moment scary? Yes. But it is not “uncertain.” It is not “unknown.” It is not “unprecedented.” The same ingredients are present today as they have been for all crisis in American History. And I see the horizon. It is full of promise.
Don't kid yourself with hindsight bias. The Great Recession and COVID-19 Pandemic have been rough times in history. In fact, I would say the COVID-19 crisis was more unsettling than any other in recent decades. Remeber:
2nd Worst Day in Dow Jones History: March 16, 2020 saw the Dow Jones lose 12.93% in one ... single ... day. Even I read that now and wonder where I garnered my resolve from. (Experience and knowledge?)
I was LIVE on Facebook on March 19, 2020, guiding clients with data-based information.
I adopted two mantras: This, too, shall pass. AND Nobody is jumping ship.
I must let clients and their results speak for themselves. Surmise it to say that folks were operating by extreme fear in March 2020. As of October 2020, my hope is we eventually acknowledge that things unwound quickly, and there may have been some exaggerations. AND it was a once-in-a-decade opportunity for aggressive investors to be assertive and invest if they could do so!
How does your wealth measure up? How do your portfolio choices compare?
